This painting began as a vague vision for a cedar tree painting.
As I went walking in the forest I was teased by a faint image in my mind – a glimpse here and there.
During a winter’s sunset, with the sun shining sideways through swooping branches, I took a pause as an image finally presented itself. There is a particular feeling I get when I know a painting is being inspired and I drink it in.
Later, I sketched from the photo – adding and omitting, emphasizing and simplifying – finding the harmony in the chaos of the upward thrust and downward sweep.
